Gus The Un Crab Cover

Light years away from Earth, so far away you probably have never heard of it, there is a small water planet called Karkinos. This planet is near the Crab Nebula in the Milky Way Galaxy, and the people who live on it are crab people.

Karkinos is ruled by the giant King Crab, King Dukie Tootin, with his wife, Queen Sally-Mae Blue. Their daughter, Princess Dungeness Darling, is the most beautiful crab on the entire planet of Karkinos.

The crab people of Karkinos live very good lives. They get along with one another. They never have wars or other kinds of fighting. Instead, they spend their time being happy and making things. They are also very smart, so their technology is very advanced.

One day, King Dukie Tootin decided the crab people should share their knowledge and peaceful way of life with other planets. He had the best scientist crabs make probes that could be sent out into the universe.

They made hundreds and hundreds of probes. The crab people had a big ceremony and launched all the probes with the hopes that they would help them find other civilizations. One probe traveled 6,500 light years from Karkinos to Earth.

Just like everything that enters Earth’s atmosphere, it caught fire when it got here. Most of the probe burnt up, but a small piece survived.

That piece was a transmitter shaped like a small stone, no bigger than a peanut. This transmitter stone splashed down in the ocean near a small reef off the coast of Key West, Florida. It sank through the water to the sea floor.

It was so small that no one noticed it at first. Below that reef was a rock cave. In that rock cave lived a family of Florida Stone Crabs, the McCrabsters. There was Mr. McCrabster, his wife, Mrs. McCrabster, and their son, Gus.

Like all crabs, Mr. and Mrs. McCrabster were very grumpy. They didn’t like anyone or anything. And they expected Gus to be just like them. But Gus had a big secret. Gus wanted…to help people. He actually liked a lot of things. He was not a crabby crab at all! He was an “Un-Crab”!

But his family would never understand that. So, around them, Gus pretended to be crabby just like they were.

One day, Gus was walking around the reef when he noticed what looked like a small, shiny stone. He picked it up. Then he gasped and dropped it. As soon as he touched the stone, he heard voices all around him!

It was strange, and Gus was a little scared. He was also curious, so he picked up the stone again. Yes, those were voices! This time, Gus wasn’t so surprised; instead, he listened carefully. Then he looked around at the reef.

There were all kinds of creatures swimming by or walking on the ocean floor. Gus realized he could suddenly understand them! He put down the stone. Once he stopped touching it, he couldn’t understand the other creatures. Gus picked up the stone again. Now, he was excited.

“This is a lucky magic stone!” he said to himself. Several fish swimming by looked at him strangely. Gus realized they had understood him. That meant that when he held the stone, he could understand other creatures, and they could understand him.

Now, Gus had a way to start helping other creatures. He was so happy. What Gus didn’t know was that the stone was transmitting back to Karkinos. It allowed the scientist crabs to see and hear everything Gus said or did. As soon as Gus started transmitting, the head scientist crab ran to get King Dukie Tootin.

The king was very excited by this discovery. He made a royal proclamation to let every crab person know about Gus and Earth. The crab people were incredibly excited to have found another planet covered in water. King Dukie wanted to see if the sea creatures of Earth would be friends with the crabs of Karkinos. He wanted to send someone to travel to Earth and meet Gus. Because Karkinos was so far from Earth, it would take a very special spaceship to carry whoever made the trip. It would take a long time to build.

While they built it, they continued to watch and listen to Gus. Let’s follow along with Gus, the Un-Crab, on his next adventure!

Gus didn’t have to go far to get to where he was going. He was looking for a group of striped parrotfish. Normally, he would never go looking for a parrotfish. They weren’t very nice most of the time. However, there were so many of them. And they were always talking about everything. Mrs. McCrabster called it gossiping. She said she hated gossiping, but that didn’t mean much. She hated everything. She was a crabby crab, remember?

Soon, Gus spotted a group of parrotfish. They were all in a circle, squawking. Gus was a little afraid to swim up to them, but he had promised Clara he would help. So, he took a deep gulp of water and swam over, holding his lucky magic stone.
“Hello,” he said, “I’m Gus, the Un-Crab.”

All the parrotfish stopped talking, they looked at each other with confusion on their faces. Just like the clownfish, they were confused that this little crab was talking to them. One parrotfish gave Gus a small smile. Gus smiled back.

“Excuse me, madam. Do you know who painted the coral where the clownfish live?” Gus asked.

All the parrotfish started talking at once again. They had all seen the coral, too. Most of them were sharing stories about seeing it.

Some of the parrotfish started talking about how worried they were about it. Gus listened carefully to see if anyone was talking about what happened or what to do. Nobody was.

“Excuse me again,” he said to the parrotfish that had smiled at him.

“My name is Lucy,” she told him.

“Hello, Lucy,” he replied. “Do you know how to help the clownfish? I promised them I would try to help.”

“I don’t know how to help,” Lucy said. “And none of my friends here know, either.”

“What should I do?” Gus asked. He was very worried about the coral and the clownfish and very sad he couldn’t help, yet.

Lucy thought for a long time. Finally, she said,

“Gus, I have an idea! Why don’t you go see the great and wise octopus?”

“The great and wise octopus?” Gus asked. His voice shook a little. His parents had told him about the big, scary octopus. Mostly, they had told him that the octopus liked to eat little crabs. They have always warned him to stay away!

“Yes, the great and wise octopus,” Lucy said. “He knows everything. I’m sure he can help you. He lives in a secret cave. I can tell you where it is, but you must be careful! He doesn’t like visitors.”

Going to visit the octopus when he didn’t like visitors did not sound like a good idea to Gus. Still, he listened carefully as Lucy told him where the octopus lived. He had promised he would try to help. If the octopus knew how to help, Gus had to go visit him.

Gus followed Lucy’s directions, and soon he was at the entrance to the cave where the great octopus lived. Gus was so scared; he was shaking in his shell. The sound of his shell shaking was so loud, it woke up the octopus.

“Who goes there?” the octopus said, cracking one eye open. His deep voice echoed through the cave.
As soon as his giant eye spotted Gus, he reached out with his long tentacles and surrounded Gus. His arms blocked the exit to the cave.
Gus was trapped!

Gus The Un Crab - Book 2

Gus is a crab who lives in the ocean, in a small reef off the coast of Key West, Florida. There’s only one problem – Gus isn’t crabby at all! In fact, he’s so nice you could call him un-crabby. Unlike his family and friends, he’s happy and he wants to help others. One day Gus finds a lucky magic stone that lets him speak to all the other animals in the ocean. Gus is excited and hopes he can use the stone to communicate with his fellow sea creatures, and maybe help them, too! Little does Gus know, the stone came from outer space. It was sent by the inhabitants of a faraway watery planet called Karkinos. This planet was inhabited by an advanced race of crab people. And they were watching Gus. As for Gus, finding the stone is just the start of a grand adventure for him. So now and forever he will be known as Gus, the Un-Crab!

Chapter 3

Up close, the manatees were even bigger. Gus clutched his stone tightly and took another deep breath.

His voice quivered as he said to one of the manatees that was swimming by, “Hello, I’m Gus, the Un-Crab.”

The manatee slowed down and looked at Gus. She looked surprised that he had talked to her, but she gave him a slow, wide smile.

“Howdy, Gus. My name is Hestia.”

“Hi Hestia. That’s a pretty name. I’ve never heard it before.” Gus said.

Hestia smiled even wider. Gus noticed how big her mouth was, and he remembered what his mother said about getting eaten. But Hestia’s smile seemed very kind.

“Thank you, Gus!” she said. “Hestia was a goddess from mythology. Do you know about her?” Gus shook his head. “Well, she was the goddess of peace, serenity, and gentleness. Do you know why that’s such a good name for a manatee?”

Gus shook his head again, “No, I don’t. Why?”

“Because manatees are very gentle! It’s our nature. We are no threat to anyone in the ocean, not even humans or,” Hestia smiled again, “very small and polite crabs. So you don’t need to be afraid.”

Gus smiled back at Hestia. She was very nice, even if she was the biggest creature he had ever been so close to.

“So you don’t ever, for example, eat crabs?”

Hestia laughed. “No, Gus. Manatees never eat other animals. We only eat plants.”

Gus remembered Isabella had explained to him that some animals only ate plants. She called them “herbivores”. And animals that lived in the water and only ate plants were called “aquatic herbivores”.

Gus was learning so much from Isabella. He realized that he loved learning. And it was all thanks to his lucky magic stone!

Now that he knew Hestia was so nice, he wanted to ask her more questions.

“Hestia, why do you and the other manatees only swim by the reef from a distance? Do you not like the reef? It’s very nice!”

“No, of course we like the reef,” Hestia said. “But like I said, manatees only eat plants. And the plant we like to eat best is seagrass. Seagrass grows best in open, flat parts of the ocean.

Sometimes it does grow near the reefs, but when it grows there, it is hard to reach. It’s much easier for us to find the seagrass in other places.”

“Plus,” Hestia added, “the coral surrounding the reef is delicate. We could damage it if we got too close.”

“That’s very thoughtful of you,” Gus said. He felt touched that the manatees would worry about the other animals.

“We must all get along and be courteous to others,” Hestia said. She smiled, like being nice to others made her happy.

Gus wished that someone could explain being nice to his mom and dad. They only liked being crabby.

Then Gus thought of another question.

“Hestia, where are you and all the other manatees going?”

“We are headed to our winter homes,” Hestia replied.

“Winter homes?” Gus asked, confused. What was a winter home? Gus only had one home, and it was the same in the summer and winter.

“Yes, we go to live in a different place during the winter months. You see, we are warm-blooded creatures and cannot survive in the open ocean during the colder parts of the year. So, every year around this time, we travel to our winter homes.”

“Why can’t you survive in the open ocean in winter?” Gus asked.

“Because it gets very cold out there. We lose too much body heat when we’re surrounded by cold water. We have to go to where the water is warmer, so we can keep our body temperature as high as it needs to be.”

“Oh, I see,” Gus said. He nodded, but he didn’t completely understand. Like all crustaceans, crabs were cold-blooded. Shrimps, lobsters, crayfish, barnacles, and even water fleas – all his fellow crustaceans were cold-blooded. So Gus didn’t understand why anyone would want or need to find warmer water. He loved cold water.

“Where do you go?” Gus asked. Then he worried that he was asking too many questions. “If you don’t mind telling me, I mean.”

Hestia smiled again. Gus thought Hestia must smile almost as much as he did!

“I don’t mind telling you at all. We go to places that are closer to the land. Rivers, inlets, springs, and even places very near where humans are, like the discharge basins near power plants.”

It sounded like Hestia had seen a lot more of the world than Gus. “Wow, I’ve never seen any of those places!” Gus said. “I hope someday I can see them all.”

“I’m sure if you try, you can,” Hestia said.

Then, without any warning, Hestia suddenly stopped talking and headed for the surface of the ocean!

As for Gus, finding the stone is just the start of a grand adventure for him. So now and forever he will be known as Gus, the Un-Crab!

Chapter 1

Gus woke up in a great mood. Now he had helped the clownfish and the manatees. He felt so great that he was able to help others and wanted to do more.

He had met Hestia the manatee by swimming away from the reef and talking to her even though he was scared. Since that turned out so well, Gus decided to venture out into the open sea today.

It can be very dangerous for a small crab like Gus to go out into opens parts of the ocean. It’s not as safe as the waters around the reef. But Gus was feeling very brave. After all, he had his lucky magic stone. It helped him to talk to the other animals, even humans. Because of that, Gus felt very confident.

Gus started swimming. The further he swam, the more nervous he got. It was a little scary to be out in the open ocean like this. For a moment, he thought about turning around and going back. Then he thought about how good it felt to help his new friends.

He held tightly to his lucky magic stone and kept going.

After a while, Gus paused for a rest. As he was resting, he saw a school of fish swimming toward him. He got excited – maybe they needed help!

As the school got closer, though, Gus got very nervous. It was a school of barracuda. Barracuda are long silver fish with long, sharp teeth. They liked to eat other fish. And they were meaner than crabs.

Gus didn’t think he could do anything to help a barracuda. And he was a little worried about what they would say or do if they saw him. He was afraid, so he looked around for a place to hide.

On the ocean floor, he spotted a nice big rock. He darted down and hid behind it.

The school of barracuda got closer… and closer… They swam so close to the rock that Gus felt his heartbeat very fast. But then they passed by and kept on swimming.

Gus heaved a sigh of relief. Some animals were just too scary!

Just then, a huge shadow passed over Gus. It was so big, he thought that it must be a boat. He wondered if the humans in that boat knew his friend Isabella. Isabella and her team would bring a boat when they came to work on the reef or to visit the manatees.

When Gus looked up, though, it wasn’t a boat at all!

It was a whale. And beside that whale was… another whale!

It was a whole pod of whales, swimming by overhead.

Gus had been nervous to talk to Hestia the manatee, because manatees are so much bigger than crabs. But whales are even bigger than manatees!

In fact, they’re much, much bigger.

Still, Gus had learned that just because an animal was big, it didn’t mean that they were mean. So even though he was a little afraid, he still swam up to the pod of whales.

“Hello, there,” he said, “I’m Gus the Un-Crab.”

One of the whales stopped. She seemed a little confused. Gus was used to that by now. Every time he said hello to a new animal; they were confused that they could understand him. Most of them had never spoken to a crab before.

“Hi Gus,” the whale said slowly. She had a deep, booming voice. Gus realized it must be so deep because she was so big!

“My name is Josephine Fiona Fin,” the whale continued, “but most people just call me Fifi.”

“Hello, Fifi. It’s great to meet you,” Gus replied.

“It’s great to meet you, too, Gus,” Fifi said. She looked worried, but also curious. “How are you able to talk to me?”

Gus explained about the lucky magic stone and how it meant he could talk to other animals and understand them. He was going to explain to Fifi about how he had helped his friends, Clara the clownfish and Hestia the manatee, when Fifi interrupted him.

“Will you excuse me for a moment, Gus?” she asked. And then she started to swim up toward the surface.

As she swam, Gus realized that there was a much smaller whale following her. The smaller whale stayed close by Fifi’s side.

“I think that whale is a baby,” Gus said to himself. And then he realized why the baby whale was so close to Fifi – Fifi was its mom!
